Who's Influencing You?

This morning after dropping my children off at school, I sat down with a cup of coffee, logged into my Facebook account, and began reading the statuses of friends in my newsfeed. As I read through some of their uplifting thoughts, weekend plans, and newest "likes," I began to consider how different this view would be if most of my friends did not share my values and hope in Christ.

Information about my friends' thoughts and upcoming events customize the way I see my Facebook newsfeed each day, but they play an even more important role in influencing the way I see life. Proverbs 12:26 reminds us of the strong influence that our friends have in shaping us. "The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray."

Are we being intentional about pursuing friends who point us to Truth? Are we encouraging our children to do the same?

The Bible gives us clear direction when it comes to identifying good friends who will encourage us in our walk with Christ. Here are some of the qualities to look for in relationships we should prioritize. These friends are

  • Characterized by personal integrity and gracious words -- Proverbs 22:11
  • Cautious with words -- Proverbs 16:28
  • Patient and controlled, rather than easily angered -- Proverbs 22:24-25
  • Faithful through difficult times -- Proverbs 17:17
  • Trustworthy listeners and counselors -- Proverbs 27:9
  • Willing to lovingly challenge and confront us when necessary -- Proverbs 27:5-6
  • Close enough to be actively shaping and sharpening us  -- Proverbs 27:17
  • Available to help and strengthen us -- Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
  • Loyal even when it requires sacrifice -- Proverbs 17:17
  • Kind, compassionate, and willing to forgive -- Ephesians 4:32

Friends like this are a rare and treasured gift to be guarded carefully once found. As we give value to these types of relationships in our lives, and set out to become this kind of friend ourselves, we will be one step closer to encouraging our children to do the same!
